Following My Heart to Haiti

Blog post by Andrea H., Team Haiti 2012

Putting my journey into words is a difficult task for me because I feel as though I could write a novel about it. I have been through many different life experiences to bring me to where I am today.

Since I was very little I have always had a passion for children and youth. As I have grown up I have continued to surround myself with children working with youth sports, babysitting and volunteering for many different city youth events. When it came time to make a decision on what I wanted to major in and choose as a career for the rest of my life, I chose teaching. I always dreamed of being a teacher, and a few years down the road in college I realized that special education was the specific area that I wanted to focus on. I realized I wanted to work with children with special needs because during my volunteer hours that I had to do to receive my bachelor’s degree, I became aware of the vast need for teachers and advocates in this area of concentration.

There are so many children and families that are overlooked and not helped in the way they should be. The more time I spent with these children the more my heart started to melt for them. I truly have a special place in my heart for all children but more importantly those children that are in desperate need of help.

It wasn’t until I graduated from college and moved back home that I started to become interested in the orphans across the world. I had heard about different trips people take, and I had seen the commercials on TV but I never took it further than pondering the idea of somehow helping, someday. I feel so blessed to have been led into a Bible study about a year ago that has such amazing people that really helped me restore my relationship with God and continue my walk with him. There is one girl in my Bible study that was a huge factor in making this dream come true for me….her name is Callie. Our team will get to meet her while we are in Haiti. She  just traveled to Haiti last week to live and serve there for 6 months with World Orphans.

Callie introduced Amanda (another teammate) and me to World Orphans and told us if we have the heart to help to check out the website and look into it. So I glanced at it a few times and continued to pray about it and really felt God tugging at my heart to fill out the application and follow my passions and dreams. So I did and that’s how I got to where I am at now. I wanted to join this team because it is a dream of mine to travel to Haiti and serve the orphans as well as spread the love of God to all parts of the world. It’s amazing to see how much of God’s love has already been spread and how much awareness has been put out just by fundraising and talking about the trip with people such as family, friends, coworkers, brothers and sisters in Christ, and strangers!! I feel so lucky and blessed to be a part of this team and I can’t wait to go on this journey!!

Andrea resides in California and will be serving with Journey117 in October on Team Haiti.
